Protest action of the KKE and KMG near the walls of the Ukrainian Embassy in Athens

On July 6, 2023, a delegation of the KKE led by MEP Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos and members of the KMG held a picket near the Ukrainian Embassy in Athens and stuck a letter of protest addressed to the Ukrainian authorities on the door of the diplomatic institution in connection with the ongoing threats to the lives of two young communists – Alexander and Mikhail Kononovich.

The letter of protest from the KKE states:

Communist Party of Greece and Communist Youth of Greece express concern for the lives of young Ukrainian communists Alexander and Mikhail Kononovich.

In the midst of an imperialist war in Ukraine between NATO and Russia following the latter’s unacceptable invasion of Ukraine, the young Communist brothers Kononovichi were arrested on trumped-up charges and tortured by Ukrainian security forces. After a mock trial under unacceptable anti-communist legislation imposed by reactionary Ukrainian governments, the young communists were placed under house arrest, and unacceptable political persecution continues against them.

In addition, there are numerous appeals from the public about the constant threats of reprisals against young communists coming from representatives of state security services. So, they spread the address of their residence, as a result of which the nationalist fascist circles, the current police officers on the Internet call for their murder, promising “impunity” to those who do it.

We appeal to the Greek people and world public opinion, condemning the unacceptable threats of reprisal against Ukrainian comrades. The Ukrainian state and the Zelenskiy government have the primary responsibility to ensure the protection of the lives and rights of the Kononovich brothers, who are being unfairly persecuted and are now being targeted and put in danger while under house arrest.

We demand from the government of Ukraine:

• immediately guarantee the protection of life and ensure the rights of our comrades brothers Kononovich, and stop the political persecution against them,
• intervene immediately and stop unacceptable terrorist threats against them,
• guarantee respect for the democratic rights and freedoms of communists in the country.
