Return of El Niño after a seven-year hiatus (video)

El Niño is back again – with its inherent droughts, floods, disease outbreaks. Ocean warming could be particularly strong this year.

The World Meteorological Organization officially announced the occurrence of this natural phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, which negatively affects the weather on a global scale. Wilfranc Mufuma-Okia, head of regional climate forecasting services at the World Meteorological Organization, warns:

“The impact of El Niño is likely to lead to a sharp rise in global temperatures because the event will amplify anthropogenic warming and (this) will likely increase global temperatures.”

El Niño is the largest natural climatic event on the planet. This is a periodic increase in water temperature in the South Pacific, which triggers a number of other phenomena in a chain. Signs of this phenomenon were noted as early as the end of the 18th century. It attracted great attention in the late 90s of the last century, when its consequences were especially strong. The last time this phenomenon was recorded in 2014.

The biggest climate event has been linked to rising temperatures, droughts, abnormally warm winters and outbreaks of tropical diseases.
