Greece: "New Democrats" plan to legalize same-sex marriage

Greek conservatives want to legalize same-sex marriage, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said.

How informs Bloomberg, the head of the ruling party, stressed that the legalization of same-sex marriage is “part of their strategy”: “Greek society is much more ready and mature.”

Civil partnership, like most European countries, Greece recognizes – the decision was made back in 2015. In 2019, with the coming to power of the New Democracy, the country made progress in expanding the rights of the LGBT community. The Greek government has lifted the ban on blood donation for homosexual men and ended the practice of “sex normalization operations” on intersex children. In the latest ranking of European LGBT rights, Greece scored 57%, up five spots from the previous year, ahead of Germany and the UK.

However, as you know, opposition leader Alexis Tsipras also promised to legalize same-sex marriage, with the provision of full parental rights if his party wins the parliamentary elections.

Eight years ago, our publication talked about how boycott politicians, who voted for the legalization of “same-sex unions”, were announced by the Greek hierarchs. Metropolitan Nicholas of Thiotis, for example, then spoke harshly about the politicians who voted for the scandalous law:

“Why didn’t they say their position before the election so that the people know who they are voting for? How can I accept deputies who voted to reject the gospel? Let some politicians directly declare their [антихристианской] positions, and do not remember the Church when they need votes.”

Metropolitan Nicholas emphasized that he would prefer that the deputies who voted for the law cease any contact with the Church. Vladyka also urged to vote only for believing politicians. What will be the reaction now? Let’s wait and see, as they say.
