Caught without a subway ticket? How to cancel a fine in 2 clicks

Not all citizens know that they have an easy-to-use “tool” that allows you to cancel / reduce fines when traveling on public transport in Athens.

Those who commute on the subway, buses, trolleybuses and trams on a daily basis have probably come across inspectors who conduct unannounced checks to detect stowaways. Any passenger who does not have a valid (validated) ticket faces a fine that is 60 times the cost of the ticket (1.20 euros for one ticket for 90 minutes), i.e. 72 euros.

In fact a fine is imposed not only on those who do not have a ticket, but also on those who have the right to free travel in public transport, but do not have the necessary certificate with them. Corresponding a fine will also be imposed on those who travel on a reduced ticket (for example, students, people over 65 years old, etc.) without presenting the necessary documents to confirm the status.

From October 2022, passengers of fixed vehicles (metro, train and tram) have the opportunity tosubmit an electronic application for the reduction or cancellation of the fine imposed on them. This service is available on gov.gr, in the section “Citizens and everyday life” and the subsection “Transport”

Using the service is very simple. First, the citizen connects to the system with Taxisnet codes. You need to fill in the number of the fine that was imposed on you and the date of the violation (as indicated on the form of the certificate of violation, which you were required to issue).

Then you need to choose from the list of reasons why you are asking reduce or remove the fine, while describing and giving the reasons for traveling “without a ticket” (or the necessary supporting certificate) in more detail by filling in the appropriate field. Finally, you can attach scans of documents confirming the requirements of the controller (valid name card, partial exemption card, etc.). This will indicate that the fine was imposed illegally.

It is noted that the citizen must ensure that the documents attached by him were valid on the date of the offense. For example, in a personal card (travel ticket) the rest of the days on the day of the violation should be indicated.

The process is completed by sending the application to the digital mailbox of the fixed transport company (STASY SA) at gov.gr. POnce the processing is completed, the citizen is informed of the result of his application by SMS and e-mail, and the corresponding decision is also sent to his digital mailbox (my.gov.gr).

It is specified that an application for the cancellation or reduction of a fine must be submitted strictly within 60 calendar days from the day following the day of its imposition. In addition, remember that if the payment of the fine is made within 10 days, it is reduced by half.
