Crete: “warm healing waters” turned out to be… a sewage outlet

Incredible and at the same time a fact: Linoperamata beach in Crete is visited mainly by older citizens, believing that the warm water that overlooks the beach is thermal and has healing properties. However, it turns out that warm waters contain impurities.

Head of the Department of Public Health Hygiene of the Crete Region, Vice President of the Panhellenic Union of Public Health Inspectors Antonis Papadakis, speaking on CRETA TV and on the Proti program, urged citizens to avoid the beach in question, as there is a danger to public health.

Papadakis stressed that they are being dropped there treated wastewater from enterprises. He noted that many choose a particular beach because of the warm water, believing that it has healing properties. And he added that usually there is a warning sign that swimming is prohibited there. However, he noted that some people, for unknown reasons, remove this sign.

Note that some sections of Linoperamata beach are included in the list of “prohibited for swimming” compiled by local authorities in June 2023 due to sewage, reports creta24.gr.
