The number of those who refused to vote in the elections reached a record level

On Sunday 25 June, the highest turnout rate in a national election in Greece was set, reaching 47.17%, surpassing the previous record set in the September 2015 election of 43.84%.

The rate of Greek voters unwilling to vote has consistently exceeded 35% over the past 14 years, given delays in clearing voter rolls. The last time abstention from voting was recorded at less than 30% of the number registered in the voter lists was in October 2009.

At the same time, in some villages in such regions as Rhodopi, 60 people voted out of a total list of 1006 voters. However, this does not mean that almost 1000 people refused to vote: someone died already 10 years ago, but his name was not removed from the list, a lot of people went abroad

Rest? They just decided that they should not vote for anyone. The electorate of Greece is struck by political apathy… It is significant that the level not voting increased by almost 8.4% compared to the May elections (38.9% abstained). Of the eight parliamentary parties, six (ND, SYRIZA, PASOK, KKE, Greek Solution and Heading for Freedom) recorded a net decline in the number of voters.

Only the “Niki” party recorded growth, and the newly minted party “Spartans”, which received an unofficial but very significant support from the imprisoned Ilias Kasidiaris, which arose from scratch, was able to immediately enter parliament with 4.7% of the vote and 12 deputies. In fact, if all 5 right-wing parties formed a coalition, they could claim at least 3 seats in parliament, displacing PASOK.
