Kyriakos Mitsotakis sworn in as prime minister

Shortly after 13:00, Kyriakos Mitsotakis was sworn in as prime minister at the presidential palace, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, and Archbishop Hieronimos.

Immediately afterwards, Mitsotakis went to Maximou’s mansion, where his new term of office would officially begin.

For the handover ceremony, Mitsotakis was received at the Maximou mansion by Acting Prime Minister Ioannis Sarmas. During the ceremony, a short dialogue took place between them. Kyriakos Mitsotakis thanked Mr. Sarmas and the interim government cabinet for “exemplary work” during his short tenure, while Ioannis Sarmas wished Kyriakos Mitsotakis “good luck”.

At 17.00, the composition of the new government will be announced at the General Secretariat for Information and Communications. Kyriakos Mitsotakis has already prepared the groundwork for who will govern the country in the coming period.

Next Monday, July 3, at 11 am, the deputies elected in the June 25 elections will take the oath. And the next day, on Tuesday 4 July, the plenary session of the twentieth parliamentary period of presidential parliamentary democracy will be held, which will elect the speaker of the Greek parliament, the vice-presidents of the body, as well as the secretaries and deans of the parliament. This first phase of the new four-year term will end with the reading of government policy statements and a vote of confidence from Parliament.

According to the constitution (Article 84) and the Rules of Procedure of Parliament (Article 141), the government must, within fifteen days of the swearing in of the Prime Minister, appear before Parliament and demand a vote of confidence after discussing policy statements. The three-day debate on the new government’s policy statements is expected to take place a few days after MPs are sworn in and the Speaker of the House elected, culminating at midnight on the third day of debate with a vote of confidence in the new government.
