At the August BRICS summit in South Africa, Putin is expected, and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed a desire to be invited to it.
His desire was confirmed by French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, informs French broadcaster RFI. The French president wants to be the first Western leader to be invited to the BRICS summit, a group that includes South Africa, China, Russia, Brazil and India, Colonna said at a press conference in Pretoria on Monday, where she met with her South African counterpart, Foreign Minister Naledi. Pandora:
“It is always positive to keep the dialogue going, even if we don’t agree on everything. We are thinking frankly – but this is obviously a decision that only the relevant countries can take – about the possibility of continuing this dialogue, why not at the BRICS summit or in another format.”
The BRICS summit of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will be held in Johannesburg on August 22-24. The meetings are usually attended by the leaders of the five countries. If Macron receives an invitation, he will be the first Western leader to attend the summit.
Speaking at the same press conference on Monday, the South African minister said Macron’s invitation was not removed from the agenda, but the final decision rested with President Cyril Ramaphosa as chairman of the next meeting:
“If this happens, it will be an innovation within the current model of BRICS participation, but it could increase the global impact of the BRICS forum.”
Earlier, Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa, said that he expects Vladimir Putin to attend the BRICS summit in August, despite the fact that the country is obliged to arrest him and extradite him to the International Criminal Court.
