Spanish engineer invents double-decker airplane seats

Passengers often complain about limited legroom on planes, but the 23-year-old engineer may have found a solution to this problem.

Nunez Vicente from Barcelona has designed a bunk seat for airplanes that leaves extra legroom. The Chaise Longue Economy Seat fits in any medium-sized aisle, and the young engineer hopes it will enhance the long-haul experience.

The seat allows passengers to recline their seat without having to worry about disturbing the passenger sitting behind them, since their seat will be on a different floor.

According to the company founded by the young man, all chairs recline 125 degrees, and the table is built into the chair. The lower floor is ideal for people with reduced mobility as two stairs are required to reach the upper floor. Passengers will be able not only to stretch their legs, but also to support them.

Vicente built the original model in 2021 using wood. Since then he has been contacted by major players in the aviation industry, including Sir Tim Clark, Chairman of the Emirates Board of Directors. His concept has also been recently tested in Metaverse, where double-decker seats can be seen.

“I am proud of what I have achieved, but even more proud of everyone who stood by me, helped and motivated me, because it is thanks to them that I am where I am now,” Vicente wrote on Instagram last June .

It is noted that the double-decker seat is estimated to increase aircraft capacity while boosting airline profit margins. Vicente responds to those who accuse him of “working” for the industry and that his plan will worsen the experience of economy passengers: his goal is to make economy class better “for all those travelers who cannot afford to buy more expensive tickets “.
