40,000 passengers per day: A new central bus station will be built in Athens

The project for the construction of the new Eleonas Central Intercity Bus Station, a major transport project that will become a modern transport gateway for intercity road transport to and from Athens, is under way.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy has approved the environmental conditions of the project with a budget of more than 100 million euros, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is the implementing agency for the project.

The new station will replace the existing Kifissos and Lyosia intercity bus stations and is expected to become a transfer hub as it will be located next to the Eleonas metro station, at a number of city bus stops, so that passengers can easily travel to and from the capital. It will also serve national intercity and international buses.

The bus station will include 4 buildings, a conference center, a hotel, airport-type terminal entry control areas, 70 bus seats, shops and services. It will serve over 40,000 passengers a day, which means 15 million passengers a year.

Where will it be built
The new Central Intercity Bus Station (CSIL) is planned to be built on an area of 66,420 sq.m. in the area of Eleonas, in the municipality of Egaleo, which is surrounded by the side road of the National Road of Athens-Lamia (Kifissos Avenue), the streets of Iera Odos and Agia Annis, and Pieria.

It will be almost directly connected to the ELAIONAS metro station line 3, which will facilitate the transfer of travelers to other modes of transport, to the center of Athens, the port of Piraeus or Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. At the same time, there will be direct access to the Athens-Lamia national road (Kifissos Avenue), to the main road network of Attica (Iera Odos, Orfeos, Agios Polikarpou).

Within the bus station there will be taxi ranks, parking and/or parking areas for private cars, bus stations (new bus station OASA in Eleonas on the Attiko metro land plot, approximately 4 ha of land adjacent to the northern border of the Eleonas metro station). The new station will improve the passenger experience and will resemble a small airport with shops, restaurants, service areas, etc.

Territories of the new station
The KSSYL building complex will be built on the site of the existing Attico metro depot. Most of the new bus terminal facilities will be built as a vertical superstructure based on the pre-existing depot structure and its expansion.

The total area of closed premises is 41,115.00 sq.m., additional circulation rooms – 2,765.00 sq.m., total building area – 43,880.00 sq.m. Underground car park – 28,052.00 sq.m., additional premises – 35,586.00 sq.m.
According to the decision, one of the key objectives of the next design phases is to achieve the character of “near zero energy building” (nZEB).
