The condition of a volunteer who was bitten by a viper has improved

The health of a volunteer herpetologist who was bitten by a viper while trying to remove a snake from a school has improved.

The 39-year-old woman appears to be winning the battle for life. She has already been disconnected from the breathing apparatus, as she can breathe on her own, and her body copes without mechanical support.

A woman who suffered anaphylactic shock from a viper bite and was urgently admitted to the intensive care unit, since last Friday (26/5), has been admitted to the Papanicolaou Hospital (Thessaloniki). Currently, after a week of treatment, she has begun to feel well and is already counting down to discharge.

“My daughter is not a herpetologist, she is a volunteer,” says the mother of a 39-year-old volunteer who was bitten by a viper, “she did not realize the degree of danger and was sure that she could take the snake without using additional tools. As a result, the snake bit her … And everything almost ended in tragedy.

As previously written “Athenian News”, the incident occurred in a school complex located next to Γιαννιτσών street. The guard noticed the viper during school hours on the first floor of the premises. The man immediately informed management, and a call was made to the fire department. They redirected the appeal, giving the phone number of two herpetologists. The first to arrive was a Wildlife Action volunteer.

The school watchman moved the snake from the ground floor to the school yard with a broom. A herpetologist wearing a gardening glove caught a snake to put in a cage. However, the viper bit her. The woman managed to place the viper in a cage, and then in her car. However, after that, right in front of the teachers, she began to rapidly develop anaphylactic shock. The woman’s condition deteriorated very quickly, and an ambulance was called. The woman was taken to the Papanicolaou Hospital, where she was admitted to Ward A’ ICU with hemodynamic instability and in critical condition. And only after a week, doctors can say with certainty that the threat to life has passed..
