Seismologist expert: "We must prepare for a powerful earthquake in Corinth"

The intense seismic activity observed in the Gulf of Corinth recently prompted seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos to cite a number of specific facts.

In a post on social media, a well-known seismologist presented data on earthquakes measuring 6 on the Richter scale and above that occurred in the area after 1900. He also referred to his book, which outlined the facts and their analysis. These are the earthquakes that have occurred:

– 1909 Fokida (Dafnohori),

– 1928 Corinth,

– 1965 Fokida (Eratini),

– 1970 Fokida (Itea),

– 1981 Corinthia (Alcyonidas),

– 1995 Achaia (Egio)”.

According to him, it took the scientist five whole years to write the book. “Since some people vaguely say that my views on the seismicity of the Corinthian Gulf are wrong, I cite data on earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above after 1900. It took five years of my life to write the corresponding book:” 1909 Phokis (Dafnohori), – 1928. Corinth, – 1965 Phokis (Eratini), – 1970 Phokis (Itea), – 1981 Corinth (Alcyonides), – 1995 Achaea (Aegio). The following is obvious:

1. Mean relapse time 21 years. I’m conservatively saying 25-30 years because perhaps one of the earlier quakes had a slightly lower magnitude (eg 5.8 or 5.9).

2. The last strong earthquake occurred in 1995 (in Aigio).

3. 28 years have passed since then.

4. The need to prepare for the expected earthquake in the region is simply necessary. What do I insist on?
