“Mysterious” fall in gasoline prices… ahead of the election

Although there are about ten days left before the elections, a natural question arose among citizens about what is happening: the price of fuel has been falling in recent days, while none of the negative circumstances that caused it to rise during the year have changed.

The war in Ukraine continues, and Greece has the most expensive gasoline in Europe, mainly due to the VAT, which is 24%, and two additional taxes, which the government has steadfastly refused to reduce throughout the previous period. 60% of the price of gasoline is … taxes.

On Twitter, however, there has been a relative buzz on the subject, with most users thinking about the obvious. Since nothing has changed in the world situation, and since the government claimed that “we have expensive fuel because of Putin”, and now the price drops right before the elections, then some people are profiting and lowering prices, thinking that this … will help the government… to remain in power, creating an artificial climate of “euphoria”.

In all countries, the cost of gasoline is usually affected by the price per barrel, taxes, transportation costs, profit margins, etc. For some strange reason that officials in Greece will have to explain to us, the price of fuel seems to depend on whether the elections are coming up. It should be noted that against the official line of the Mitsotakis government is the ND MP candidate in the southern sector of Athens, Maria Zaga, who is also the president of Attica gasoline dealers, as she publicly announced on a TV show two days ago that she calls for an immediate reduction in VAT on fuel and other taxes. In fact, she opposes the line of the government, which Mitsotakis himself expressed just 10 days ago, where he was completely against such a possibility.

On Wednesday morning, in an interview on ANT1, Maria Zaga said: “The issue of fuel is a very long story in which the state and SIEPE are involved. I have said many times that we are talking about huge sums. There is an official sector and a semi-state, which is now the official parastatal. So as long as gasoline is expensive and gasoline is expensive due to VAT and taxes that raise the price by 60%, who wins? The parasite wins.”
