May 9 in Athens laid flowers at the monument to the Soviet soldier

On May 9, about 200 people came to the monument to the Soviet soldiers who fell for the freedom and independence of Greece in the metropolitan area of Kallithea to celebrate Victory Day.

The action was organized by the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots, but it was attended not only by Russians, but also by local Greeks, as well as immigrants from the countries of the former USSR – Pontic Greeks, Kazakhs, Ukrainians, Moldovans, Georgians, Armenians, etc.

At the rally dedicated to the Victory Day, a representative of the mayor’s office of Kallithea, members of parliament, and public figures spoke.

“I’m not sure if everyone knows the history of this monument. Here stood a German fascist company nearby, which held prisoners. Among them were three Soviet soldiers. History has preserved only their names – Nikolai, Ivan and Alexei. In 1943, they managed to escape, they joined the ranks of the National Liberation Army ELAS in Kallithea. In 1944, together with 25 residents of Kallithea – they were both ELAS fighters and civilians – they were shot near Agia Eleussa, – said Evgenia Krichevskaya, head of the KSRS.

The head of the Coordinating Council thanked the local Kallithea city hall for taking care of the monument, which appeared thanks to the efforts of the city hall, the mayor, Greek and Soviet war veterans.

“For 18 years we have been bringing flowers to this monument, which has been standing here since 2005, even before the Immortal Regiment appeared in Russia, in Greece,” Krichevskaya said.

Representatives of state organizations, political parties and individuals laid flowers at the monument to the Soviet soldier.

At the end of the official part, a concert was held, at which they performed songs of the war years, as well as songs about the war.

After the action at the monument to the Soviet soldier, many of the participants went to Acharne, where a memorial service was held in the Temple of Panagia Sumela for those killed in the war, incl. in memory of those killed in the House of Trade Unions in Odessa on May 2, 2014.
