Athens hosted the “Immortal Regiment”

The procession to the American embassy in Athens and the action “Immortal Regiment” were held by the Greek left organizations on May 7 in connection with the Victory Day.

The procession gathered about 200 people, then the column split into two – part went to the American embassy, part moved forward to lay flowers at the monument to the victims of fascism. Ahead of the column was a platoon of police special forces, the approaches to the American diplomatic mission were blocked by police buses.

Greece was a kind of exception from the countries of Europe, it offered real resistance to fascism and held back the onslaught of the enemy for almost seven months. Greece fought for 217 days – longer than any other country in Europe. She did not send forces against the Soviet Union during the Second World War, the Germans were unable to mobilize their troops. The inhabitants of Greece are proud of their struggle during the Second World War, many celebrate May 9 as the Day of the Anti-Fascist Victory of the Nations.

For several years, the inhabitants of Greece and Russia organized the Immortal Regiment campaign, in 2023 they also decided to walk with portraits of relatives, many of whom fought against the Germans in partisan detachments. The procession was under the slogans “Greece honors the victims of the Red Army”, “Death to fascism”, “Greece is against sending weapons to Kiev” and a banner in the colors of the St. George ribbon with the words “Thank you for saving Europe from Nazism”.

“We simply could not help but go outside before the Day of the anti-fascist victory of the Red Army. Demonstrations are taking place all over the world, the Greek people fought against fascism, and we simply had to celebrate this day, ”said one of the participants in the procession.
