Where will the Greeks go on May Day

The demand of Greek citizens for holiday packages registered by the tourist offices for the three days of May Day is characterized as very satisfactory.

As was recorded in the recent Easter period, the tourist flow was quite close to the level of 2019. The number of Greek travelers on May Day has recovered to around 80% of pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, travel agencies note that demand revolves around domestic destinations, which were also in demand at Easter. A similar percentage of “thirsty travel” Greeks is observed in their desire to go on holiday abroad.

The Ionian Islands lead in demand and popular destinations are Nafplio, Kastoria, Porto Heli, Patmos, Crete, Kythira, Loutra Pozar, Monemvasia and Meteora, among others. It is noted that due to the new opportunity for remote work offered by businesses and the calendar proximity of Easter to May Day this year, part of the Greek travelers who have chosen domestic destinations for Easter will stay there for three days of May Day.

Representatives of tourist offices dealing with Greek destinations give their assessment of the traffic on May Day and the three days of the Holy Spirit: “The season in Skopelos will start at the beginning of this year with international arrivals from markets we have targeted in recent years such as the UK. Expected that flows from Scandinavia and the Netherlands will be equally important. While travelers from France, Austria and Eastern Europe will also give preference to Greece this year. On May Day and especially on the three days of the Holy Spirit, as well as in June in general, the occupancy will be especially high,” commented Yanna Efstatiou, Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Municipality of Skopelos.

“The reports we are getting about the season are very positive: orders for Naxos from abroad are growing by leaps and bounds as summer approaches. France, Italy, Austria, England and even more distant markets such as the US are responding to our call. Attendance will be at a high level during the three days of May Day and the Holy Spirit,” said Vangelis Katsaras, Deputy Mayor for Tourism of Naxos and the Lesser Cyclades.
