Union of Journalists of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA) has decided to grant honorary membership and trade union ID to journalist and Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange, ESIEA told ESIEA on Thursday.
The Hellenic Union participates in the initiative of the Union of Italian Journalists (Federazione Nazionale Stampa Italiana-FNSI), hosted by members of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), an affiliate of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). So far, eighteen European Unions of Journalists have followed suit.
The joint declaration, signed by the jointly participating journalists’ unions, was presented to Assange’s wife, Stella Morris, at the FNSI office in Rome on Thursday. We, the undersigned European unions and associations of journalists, join the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) in calling on the US government to drop all charges against Julian Assange and allow him to return home to his wife and children.
Julian Assange remains in custody in London and faces extradition to the US.
