Presence of pets at archaeological sites

The entry of domestic animals to specific archaeological sites was previously allowed under certain conditions, subject to the conclusion of the Central Archaeological Council ΚΑΣ.

Until now, only guide dogs for people with disabilities have been allowed into archaeological sites. Now more than 120 places will allow pets under certain conditions, such as the presence of a sanitary book. This is the first, but an important step towards streamlining the relevant legislation, bringing it into line with similar ones applied in the countries EU.

The Central Archaeological Council does not allow pets in high-traffic archaeological sites such as the Acropolis, Knossos, Ancient Olympia and Delphi.

“Obviously the entrance with pets not allowed on all archaeological sites in Greece. In places with especially heavy traffic and the presence of people with special needs, such as the Acropolis of Athens, the entrance for our little friends will not be easy, as they themselves may be in danger and experience discomfort due to crowds,” explained Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture of Greece .

The new ΚΑΣ decision concerns archaeological sites, where, due to their large scale, there are no problems with free movement around the territory and the accumulation of visitors, the Ministry of Culture said in a statement.

However, more than 120 archaeological sites will be pet friendly, and more than 110 enclosures will be placed at the entrance for animal guardians to leave while they tour.

Pets are not allowed inside the monuments, theaters, temples, tombs, on the mosaic floors of cultural monuments.

Pets will now be allowed to visit archaeological sites such as Vergina, Delos, Ancient Messina, Mycenae, Philippi οι).

Rules for pets:

  • Pet guardians must have a leash up to one meter long, hold the animals in their arms or in a carrier.
  • When entering the archaeological site, the owner must present a health certificate of the animal. In addition, you must have with you accessories for cleaning up after your four-legged pet (scoop and bag).
  • Large animals can enter the territory of the cultural monument only in a muzzle.
