Volos: black jellyfish flooded the coast of Pelion

Black jellyfish have reappeared on the banks of Volos, a reminder of their intense presence there last summer. They filled the Pagasitikos, from Katiragi to Afissos, all along the coastline.

These jellyfish belong to the species Aequorea forskalea, they are safe and harmless, but their appearance on the beach of Afissos worried swimmers. Residents of the area have noticed that their population has increased in recent days, turning the color of the sea from blue to black.

This species is described as a black jellyfish due to the many dark blue canals that appear black. Aequorea forskalea can withstand cold water and will soon disappear. The phenomenon is not only local, since such jellyfish have flooded the coastal regions of Attica since the beginning of March.

According to researchers from the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR), the increase in recent years of jellyfish swarms at the global level may be a response to the cumulative effect of several anthropogenic influences, the most important of which are climate change – rising sea temperatures – and uncontrolled fishing.
