Alec Baldwin has been cleared of charges for accidentally killing Ukrainian cameraman Galina Gatchins on the set of Rust in 2021.
Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, the actor’s attorneys, say:
“We are pleased with the decision to close the Alec Baudwin case and are convinced that the facts and circumstances of this tragic event will be properly investigated.”
However, New Mexico Attorneys Kari Morrisey and Jason Lewis, citing “new facts” in the case, said the charges could be re-arranged and the investigation would continue. They stated that they could not “act within the current time constraints, on the facts and evidence handed down by law enforcement in their current form:
“Therefore, we will drop the manslaughter charges against Mr. Baldwin for further investigation. This decision does not absolve Mr Baldwin of criminal liability and the charges may be re-arranged.”
After the actor was cleared of the charges, he thanked his wife Hilaria and lawyer Luke Nikas for their support:
“I owe this woman everything I have. And you, Luke.”
The decision to drop the charges against the popular actor came after investigators came to the attention of new evidence suggesting that the gun used in the shooting was modified, according to CNN source familiar with the investigation. Investigators will examine the weapon to determine the extent of modifications that may have affected its operation.

The weapon for the filming of the film “Rust” was supposed to be loaded with blank cartridges, but the shot from it turned out to be fatal for the cameraman and director of the film, in which Baldwin plays the main role and is a co-producer. As a result of a gunshot wound, a female cameraman, 42-year-old photographer and cameraman Galina Gatchins, died, the director was in critical condition. Alec did not rule out that this tragedy would put an end to his career.
The shooting of the film has been put on hold for the duration of the investigations, but now the Rust team is ready to get back to work.
