Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Patriarchate arrested in Turkey for stealing a valuable watch

Grand Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Agatangelos Siskos was arrested on Monday in Turkey for stealing a pocket watch of great value, which was made for the collection in the 1800s by order of the palace.

According to the publication “Εθνικού Κήρυκα”(National Bulletin), The Great Archimandrite was taken to prison, from where he was released with the intervention of the police guard of Patriarch Bartholomew. According to the same source, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew sent him on indefinite leave while he appears to be terribly worried and saddened by this incident because The patriarchy was defamed.

The shop owner, in her statements to the Turkish media, said, among other things, that “it’s a pity because the perpetrator is a member of the Patriarchal court and should have thought about the institution he represents and be more careful.”

Turkish media published a video of the arrest of the Great Archimandrite

It is noted that Archimandrite Agatangelos Siskos, originally from Kastoria, came to the Patriarchate as a layman and was ordained deacon and presbyter there, and is alsochief archkeeper of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

In a telephone conversation with the publication “Εθνικού Κήρυκα” and the Great Archimandrite Agatangelos Siskos recorded the following dialogue:

“Εθνικού Κήρυκα”: Do you have any comments on the watch theft you are involved in?

Father Agatangelos: First of all, thank you for your interest, clearly journalistic. This question was assigned to an expert lawyer. While the investigation is ongoing, I have no right to say anything, and I also do not have the permission of the director of the press service of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, because this is an institutional issue. Because in the video in question, the lady refers to the status of the cleric of the patriarchy, so this is an institutional issue, and I have no right to say anything.”

“Εθνικού Κήρυκα”: However, the person in the video is you.

Father Agatangelos: I told you this, I can’t say anything more.

“Εθνικού Κήρυκα”: Why did the Patriarch send you on indefinite leave?

Father Agathagelos: This is a spiritual question, which the Patriarch himself knows. What can I tell you?
