Secrets of Amphipolis: finally allowed to visit the tomb

After many years of being “in the dark”, the archaeological site of Amphipolis culture reveals its secrets.

The fame of the unique archaeological find in Amphipoli in 2014 went far beyond the borders of Greece. Many archaeologists have shown close attention to the excavations of the royal tomb on the hill of Kasta.

This year, Amphipolis, the hill of Kasta, opens its doors to the first visitors, nine years after the end of the archaeological excavations here. Visits will be made in groups of 5 people, accompanied by a security guard or an archaeologist. The monument-burial aroused not only the interest of foreign media, but also fierce disputes at the political and scientific level.

What visitors to Amphipolis will see

Firstly, you can see the sphinxes guarding the entrance to the tomb, the statues of Caryatids, the inlaid mosaic floor. Next, you will go inside the room, walk through all the compartments, up to the last room, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the distant past.

A visit to the archaeological site lasts from 15 to 20 minutes. The first visitors are expected here from the beginning of June or a little earlier. Entrance is free, without any payment. As a museum, Amphipolis will officially open in October 2023.
