Pensioners gather in the center of Athens, demanding higher pensions

On Tuesday, retirees flocked to downtown Athens to demand higher pensions to cope with the rising cost of living.

A crowd of demonstrators gathered at the Ministry of Labor on Stadiou Street on Tuesday morning and headed towards the Prime Minister’s Office, where they were met by strong police. “Rising prices are stealing our pensions and our lives,” reads the banner of the Athens and Piraeus Union of Pensioners OAEE.

The protest was organized by the OAEE retired business union and was joined by many retiree unions, including lawyers and public sector workers.

According to media reports, a delegation of pensioners met with the secretary of the New Democracy Political Committee.

They submitted a long list of demands, including:

  • Payment of the 13th and 14th pension and, in particular, the Easter pension.
  • Direct payment of retrospectives to all pensioners, without courts and prerequisites.
  • Integration of personal difference in pensions paid to all pensioners.
  • Pensions for widows will be paid to all (old and new) in accordance with the legislation of 2019.
