Greece wants to buy 49 Black Hawk helicopters from the US

The purchase of 49 American UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters for the Greek Army and Air Force is being actively promoted by the General Staff of National Defense. This is another major outfitting program with a budget of around 1.7 billion euros.

According to the military affairs website OnAlert.grover the weekend, the General Directorate of Defense Equipment and Investment (GDAEE) sent, along with a letter (LOR), a formal request of interest to the United States government for the supply of 35 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters worth 1.2 billion euros.

31 Black Hawks are intended for the needs of the army, and the remaining 4 will be transferred to the Directorate of Special Operations (DEP).

In addition, the political and military leadership of the ministry has instructed the DEAEA to formulate a second official request with an ENT mission, which will concern the acquisition of 14 more helicopters for the Air Force.

The cost of this purchase is estimated at approximately $500 million.

The progress of the armaments program is expected to be reviewed at a meeting of the Council of Chiefs of General Staff (CHS), which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

The agenda includes, among other things, the purchase of the Black Hawk, as well as the final US 5th generation fighter offer of 20 F-35 fighters for $3.5 billion, as part of the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) mission. OnAlert.gr.

Over the past 2 years, Greece has spent almost 14 billion euros on the purchase of new and used weapons, which is about 6.5% of the country’s annual GDP, and this spending will continue to grow in the coming years.
