Relatives of Tempi victims demand government accountability

Relatives of the victims of the railway tragedy in Tempi began collecting signatures in order to “launch procedures for the revision of the Constitution, as well as the abolition of parliamentary immunity in the event of criminal liability of political figures.”

The initiative was made public at a concert against the privatization of the water supply system in Thessaloniki, when Thanasis Papakonstantinou spoke to a representative of the relatives of those killed in the fatal accident.

The page created by the relatives of the victims to collect signatures is called “Tempe 2023 – relatives of the victims”.

By Monday evening, the number of signatures exceeded 11,300 votes.

It is worth noting that in the last 200 years, only a few ministers or responsible officials in Greece have been held accountable for breaking the laws of the country. In the Constitution of Hellas, there are no articles on the responsibility of politicians for their miscalculations or violations of election promises. Relatives of the victims of those killed in Tempi hope to change this situation, but this will be opposed by almost all current politicians, so introducing such an obligation into the Constitution may be too dangerous for them.
