Support for victims in Tempi: 11 measures

The package to support the victims and relatives of those killed in the Tempi railway accident includes special pensions, cancellation of public debts and loans, and other important measures.

A joint statement from the Ministries of Finance, Health, Education and Religion, Labor and Social Affairs, Justice and Home Affairs, presenting measures to support families of victims, victims and passengers in the train crash, said:

“Human life is not valued. The minimum duty of the state in these circumstances is to help and support, with humility and respect, the relatives of the victims and victims of the tragic train accident at Tempe.”

Support and assistance measures:

  1. special pension is paid to the families of the deceased and to those who, as a result of the disaster, may have a permanent disability of more than 50%. The pension for each deceased is distributed between the spouse and children or, in their absence, between the parents. The pension is tax-free and is paid retroactively from March 1, regardless of other income or receipt of another pension. The amount of the special pension is fixed monthly at four times the national pension and is adjusted annually with the increase in the national pension. Responsibility for issuing pensions lies with the Revenue Policy Department of the General Treasury.
  2. Canceled outstanding as of March 31, 2023 individual debt to tax authorities and insurance funds relatives (parents, spouses or persons who have entered into a cohabitation agreement, children, brothers, sisters) of the deceased or a person who has received a permanent disability of more than 50%, as well as persons hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
  3. In agreement with banking institutions and credit managers, on their initiative, credit obligations for the families of the deceased, arising from mortgage or personal loan agreements, regardless of whether these debts are serviced or not, are cancelled.
  4. Heirs of those who died in the Tempi train accident, exempt from inheritance tax.
  5. The right to appoint work in the public sector granted to a family member of the deceased up to the second degree of kinship. Individuals who have been admitted to an intensive care unit and/or have a permanent disability of more than 50% are also eligible for an appointment. If their appointment is impossible for health reasons, then the right is transferred to their spouse or children, or one of the parents, or brothers and sisters.
  6. Litigation: In order to expedite the payment of compensation, the law will provide for the facilitation of the enforcement of judgments in the first instance. In addition, victims and their families will be provided with free legal aid at their will.
  7. All studentswho are children, spouses or persons who have entered into a civil partnership, brothers, sisters and parents of deceased persons or persons who have received a permanent disability of more than 50%, have right to translate during the current calendar year to the corresponding faculty of another higher educational institution.
  8. The above students are given priority right to accommodation in student hostels their educational institutions and free meals during training.
  9. On state exams 2023, 2024, 2025 (regular and repeated) in relation to the victims, as well as children, spouses or persons who have entered into a civil partnership, brothers, sisters and parents of the deceased persons or persons who have received a permanent disability of more than 50%, will be applied score increase.
  10. Hospitalization and rehabilitation costs victims in all institutions of the public and private sector, as well as the cost of travel to rehabilitation institutions abroad, are fully covered by ΕΟΠΠΥ, without any contribution.
  11. Free personalized psychological support provided to families of victims, victims and passengers through the National Health Service’s network of mental health centers and through the National Psychological Service’s toll-free telephone line. Support line 10306, with special option 3.

In order to quickly and immediately serve the families of victims, victims and passengers, a special structure and a telephone line are being created at the General Secretariat for Social Solidarity and Poverty Alleviation of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs to support and promptly deal with all cases of the above measures.

Rescued passengers who bought tickets without providing their personal data and left the scene without leaving contact details to government agencies are invited to contact the helpline hotline to exercise their rights.
