Audio recordings reveal events in the last minutes before train collision at Tempi

Four new audio documents have emerged that reveal the actions of the head of Larisa station shortly before the tragedy with the derailment of passenger and freight trains in Tempi.

More and more questions arise about the fatal circumstances under which the accident that claimed dozens of lives took place, and its real causes. Edition protothema.gr has published new audio documents of the conversations between the station master and the driver.

In the first conversation, the driver of Intercity 62 communicates with a member of the train crew, asks to check and report that the doors are closed and everything is ready for departure from Larisa station.

In the second audio recording, the stationmaster instructs the switchman not to turn the key so that Intercity 62 “locks in” on the ascent line and allows commuter train 1564 to pass. The local train arrived in Larissa along the descent line.

In the third conversation, the head of the station instructs the commuter train, which has already made a maneuver and entered the lifting straight to the next station Νέους Πόρους, to depart. However, he does not order the switchman to turn the diagonal key.

In the last conversation, the stationmaster gives a similar order to the Intercity train – that is, head to Νέους Πόρους on the ascending line. Then the commuter train is heard asking, “What’s 62 to do?” – probably because the Intercity could reach a much higher speed, up to 160 km per hour, and the distance between the two trains was small.

It is not yet known what the stationmaster answered, but from the tragic result it becomes clear that even then he did not understand that he did not give the order to turn the key for the passenger train, which drove into the oncoming line, on the path of a tragic collision with a freight train.
