Greece appealed to Turkey to release a prisoner from prison to say goodbye to his son who died in Tempi

The father of Nikos Nalbandis, who died in a train collision, cannot see him because he is in a Turkish prison. Greece turned to Turkey with a request to grant him leave to say goodbye to his 28-year-old son.

Diplomatic sources refer to the request of a Greek prisoner in a Turkish prison to attend the funeral of his son, who is among the victims of a railway accident. This is the father of 28-year-old Nikos Nalbandis, who was the driver of the fatal train:

“In a message yesterday, the family of a Greek prisoner who is closely related to one of the victims of the Tempi train accident requested assistance from the Greek consulate in Andrianoupolis to obtain humanitarian permission to attend their son’s funeral.”

In accordance with the instructions of Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, the Greek consul immediately contacted the Turkish prosecutor’s office and requested an emergency permit to visit a Greek citizen, without respecting the weekly deadline. The requested permission to visit was granted on an exceptional basis and today, March 3, the said meeting is expected to take place, writes newsbeast.gr.

Accepting or not accepting a request for a “special permit for humanitarian reasons” is the sole responsibility of the Turkish authorities,” the diplomatic sources said.
