For € 270 million, Corfu will receive an alluvial berth for megayachts, like in Dubai

On the island of Corfu, the construction of an alluvial island according to the technology, as is done in Dubai, is being discussed. This project is estimated at more than 270 million euros. Even though the project is in its early stages, it is already dividing the local community.

The plan calls for a mega-yacht mooring, which will be connected to the beach by a custom-designed bridge. In particular, this is an investment of more than 270 million euros to create a marina with a capacity of 105 places for megayachts (up to 80 meters) in the south of Corfu, the publication reports. ot.gr.

When discussion was opened, many of the island’s residents spoke out against the idea. The project has fanatical supporters, but it also has fanatical opponents. The development of tourism and the investments that will be made are the main arguments of the supporters of the idea of building an artificial island. Obviously, this will create new jobs. On the other hand, there is an argument that Corfu is both tourist developed and endowed with magnificent natural beauty, so he may not need such ideas. It also highlights the notion that Dubai naturally has nothing to brag about, at least in the same way that Corfu does, so it needs such original projects.

The mayor of southern Corfu, Costas Lessis, told public broadcaster ERT3 that “this area has not been environmentally burdened by the island’s tourism development projects. We, as a municipality, when we were informed, became part of the proposal that was submitted to the Ministry of Development for financing from the recovery fund, we set and are setting certain conditions. The first condition is that the local community must have the right to vote, the institutions of our country must document their opinion. I, as mayor, put forward five main reasons that we should consider for this investment.

Firstly, will there be a burden on the environment during the construction of such a project that has economic goals? And what will it be? Secondly, the traffic load, infrastructure work, what needs to be done to support such a project, who will bear them?

They say that three ports will be upgraded. Until today they belonged to the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund, our first main principle of modernization is that these ports should be managed by the municipality. What offsetting benefits will the municipality receive from this investment?

A land plot will be purchased to be able to support the offshore infrastructure that the company proposes to build. Therefore, they will receive special construction conditions. The territory should be urbanized more widely so that the citizens also have compensatory benefits,” says Costas Lessis.
