Shipping: Greek-owned fleet "costs" $152.69 billion

Since the closing of the Suez Canal in 1967, the Greek shipping industry has assumed a central role on the world stage. At the same time, the cost of the Greek-owned fleet, which includes 4,709 ships, is estimated by Vessels Value at $152.69 billion. Thus, our country was in 3rd place in the world.

At the top of the respective list of ship-owning countries is Japan with 5,974 ships and a fleet worth $193.64 billion, while China is in 2nd place, albeit with a large number of ships (7114), with a fleet worth $182.49 billion. This is followed by the United States with 2,404 ships and a fleet value of $97.89 billion, Singapore with 2,860 ships and a fleet value of $71.92 billion, South Korea with 1,728 ships and a fleet value of $62.99 billion, Norway with 1,731 ships and with a fleet worth $58.81 billion, Germany with 2,224 ships and a fleet value of $52.03 billion, and the UK with 2,224 ships and a total fleet value of $52.03 billion.

Greece also ranked 2nd among the countries with the highest sales of used boats in 2022, with 428 vessels valued at $11.7 billion compared to China’s sales of 532 vessels valued at EUR 12.93 billion. This allowed our country to take 1st place in the corresponding rating. At the same time, with 281 ships worth 8.85 billion euros, Singapore took 3rd place. On the other hand, Greece was also in 2nd place in ship investment with 376 ships worth $9.77 billion. China spent $14.92 billion on 542 ships, ranking 1st, while the UAE came in 3rd with $5.14 billion, purchasing 271 ships.

Bulk carriers (bulker, from bulk – “bulk cargo” or bulk carrier – a specialized ship for the transport of goods in bulk, in bulk) are the most popular ships of the Greek fleet (2272 ships) with a total value of $ 42.1 billion, followed by tankers with 1450 ships, which , however, have the highest value ($61.03 billion) as the tanker sector recently hit the 13th level of the year as a result of the war in Ukraine. At the same time, despite a relatively small fleet of 127 vessels, the growing global demand for LNG has increased the value of the Gas carrier fleet to $30.50 billion.
