Reforestation in Sounio – thousands of seedlings planted

Thousands of saplings have been planted on twice in a decade fire-damaged area in Sounio to reforest.

On a 200-acre site near the village of Agios Konstantinos, 14 different types of trees and shrubs were planted in the first phase. Of these, the main part (70%) is broad-leaved (oak, honeysuckle, holly, laurel and others), and a third is coniferous (Aleppo pine and cypress). Nikos Georgiadis, Head of Forestry Management, says:

“Reforestation in Sounio, in an area that burned twice in 10 years, was done, on the one hand, to avoid desertification, and on the other hand, to actively contribute to the creation of a new forest that will be more resistant to fires. In the next period, plant conservation activities will be implemented, again with the valuable help of volunteers who will be invited in the spring and summer to help with pitting, fertilizing, weeding and watering the plants. The project will last for the next three years to ensure plant viability and resilience.”

Over 300 volunteers took part in seed collection and reforestation campaigns. The restoration covers an area of 200 acres of approximately 700 acres of the burnt area. The area is located near the village of Agios Konstantinos. Due to two successive fires, the dominant species of Aleppo pine have not been able to recover naturally. The area became a field of activity for WWF employees and hundreds of volunteers who took part in the “Give life to the forest” campaign, says CNN Greece.
