Car numbers are changing. What will the new ones look like?

Starting next autumn, the license plates of all cars in EU will acquire new characteristics that will slightly change their shape.

The license plates of cars registered in the European Union have had the same shape since the turn of the century. Most member states have introduced white plates with a blue stripe showing the EU flag and the country’s “distinctive” letters. In the case of our country, this is GR.

However, vehicle license plates of some Central and Eastern European countries have “distinctive” letters that are not clear to everyone and give the wrong impression of the country of registration. For this reason, in countries such as Lithuania, an addition will be added that will differentiate them a bit and make it easier to understand. According to representatives of the authorities, it was the car owners, the inhabitants of the country, who showed an interest in “standing out more” from the general mass of European transport.

For example, many Lithuanians will make personalized license plates with country abbreviations “LIT” rather than “LT” to distinguish them from vehicle license plates of neighboring countries. Thus, following the example of Germany with distinctive signs of cities between the letters, Lithuania will start placing the country’s red coat of arms between the vertical blue stripe and the number from October.

The specific decision of the Lithuanian government does not change anything in the existing vehicle registration plates in the country, and their owners are not required to change them. Lithuanian vehicle license plates have existed since the country’s accession to the EU in 2004. The first pan-European vehicle license plates first appeared in the Netherlands in 2000, followed by all Member States.

However, it seems that some countries are not satisfied with the result and will continue to make small changes to increase the “recognition of the region”. Something similar is expected in our country, but mainly for aesthetic reasons.
