No more paper tickets: pay by phone

Paying for public transport will be easier than ever, making it much easier for passengers to get around.

Important changes in the ways of paying and checking tickets in urban public transport are just around the corner. The Hellenic Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is working to modernize the existing e-ticketing system. As Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Kostas Karamanlis recently announced, the new system could be applied to public transport in the first quarter of 2023.

The principle of operation will be in the method “click and pay”, which will allow passengers to make contactless transactions by automatically withdrawing the fare from the bank account associated with the user’s debit card. To make a transaction in public transport, the user will be able to bring his bank card or mobile phone to a special terminal reader. Thus, the fare will be confirmed, and the turnstiles in the subway will be open for passage. To make a transaction through a mobile phone, you need activate the NFC function.

NFC is short for Near Field Communication. In fact, this is a function that allows our smartphone to communicate wirelessly with other devices located at a short distance, while consuming a minimum amount of energy.
