Father of a 5-year-old child after the fire in Kolonos: "It’s a lie that I was drunk"

A five-year-old boy who was injured in a fire in Kolonos on Monday is still in intensive care. Doctors assess his condition as critical.

His father spoke about what had happened and the danger to which his four children had been exposed. Doctors are fighting for the life of the youngest, he is in intensive care. As the head of the family says, “they shocked him and brought him back to life,” but the parents were warned that “there is no hope and only God can help.” The father of the baby tells about the circumstances of the family drama as follows:

“I have 5 children, one 22 years old from my first marriage and four from my second wife. The baby was in his crib, my wife put him to bed. I stayed up all night working in a taxi, and in the morning I went for olives in Agios Stefanos and Oropos. I was very tired, took insulin for sugar and fell asleep. It’s a lie that I was drunk. Until they said the baby was dead. I fought to save the child. The door was locked because my wife locks it to keep the baby from leaving and to protect herself from burglars. My wife and neighbor broke down the door, couldn’t get through the front door, suffocated from the smoke.”

Regarding other children, writes CNN Greece, the man said one of them was taken to the children’s hospital as a precaution, but he was fine. The children are now with his friend and his sister, as their own house was rendered uninhabitable by the fire, at least for now.

As our publication wrote, fire broke out Sunday evening in an apartment on the second floor on Alkionis street. At that moment there were three children in the house – 5, 7 and 12 years old – and their father, who fell asleep after returning from work picking olives. He woke up, hearing the calls of his seven-year-old son for help, and saw that the apartment was full of smoke. The firefighters managed to cope with the fire quickly, but the youngest of the children is in extremely serious condition, he was taken out of the house unconscious. Before the arrival of the ambulance, one of the neighbors tried to resuscitate him by giving a heart massage. The ΕΚΑΒ doctors who arrived took the baby to the ATTICO hospital, and the older children, for preventive purposes, to the Αγία Σοφία hospital.

Presumably, a frying pan was forgotten on the stove, and the fire started from there. The father, who was found with two other children near an apartment building, told firefighters that he was resting because he had been working all day.
