Minister of Citizens’ Protection: “Chemical castration of juvenile rapists”

“Chemical castration for abusers of minors should be considered under certain conditions,” Greek Citizens’ Protection Minister Makis Voridis said on Thursday after multiple reports of abuse of minors appearing in the news nearly daily.

The minister also stressed that “a life sentence should be life” for them, not parole. Speaking to state broadcaster ERT, Voridis said that “Chemical castration could become a mechanism in exchange for a life sentence.”

The minister added that in foreign countries this is used as a security measure for society, if the offender agrees to this measure in order to get out of prison without serving the entire sentence.

“So tell him that in order to get out of prison with, say, 20 years, you will be eligible for parole after you have actually served 6 years, but in order to be eligible, you will have to accept this medical akt,” he said. When asked whether he would be positive about the introduction of such a measure, the minister replied that “this is something that should be considered.”

Referring to the wave of crimes against minors, Voridis emphasized that pedophiles “The vast majority are people with a perverted passion, which is very strong, and they are not corrected.”

Speaking of life sentences ending in early release, Voridis, who is a lawyer by profession, opined that “there are certain cases of crimes or criminals which, either by virtue of the person or the heinousness of the act, we might consider that in these cases the full term of punishment imposed by the court should be served. He should serve the whole term, there should be no preferential provisions.”

“If you have a terrorist who killed 17 people and never repented, why shouldn’t he serve a life sentence, spend the rest of his life in prison?” he added. He emphasized that “there should be no legal possibility to discuss the issue of conditional release”. However, he noted that the Ministry of Justice adds to the criteria for conditional release data on the danger of the offender, whether he has reformed, data on his personality and the degree of risk of committing new criminal acts.

The minister said thatsociety demands that criminals be punished appropriately, and as this discussion opens up in public debate, I believe it will also provide ideas in the Justice Department as to where it should go.

With regard to rapists of minors, Voridis insists that in these cases “life sentences should really be life sentences.” Among the latest cases of juvenile rape was that of a 64-year-old man who raped two children aged 6 and 8 after he had previously been released from prison where he had served time for similar crimes.
