Russians will be held criminally liable for illegal visits to Northern Cyprus

Cyprus recalls the criminal liability for Russian citizens who enter the north of Cyprus using illegal checkpoints.

On October 11, Kypros Yorgallis, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Russia, warned about this in an interview with Izvestia. The statement came in response to a message about the possible start of regular flights from Russia to the unrecognized TRNC – the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. According to the newspaper Milliyet, citing its own sources, from November 15, the Russian private company plans to open flights with Northern Cyprus, the planes will land at Ercan Airport.

However, the Embassy of Cyprus reminds that travelers in this case will violate the national legislation of the country, as they will enter the Republic of Cyprus through a port or airport declared illegal in accordance with international law:

“For this reason, they are strongly advised to enter through legal checkpoints into the Republic of Cyprus so as not to face the consequences of breaking the law.”

Get to the northern part of Cyprus, writes GreekReporter, Russians can only go through a checkpoint in Nicosia, and using a direct flight from Russia or Turkey for this will be considered a criminal offense, according to the department.

The embassy emphasized that the position of the Russian Federation on achieving “a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including the creation of a bi-zone, bi-communal federation with a single sovereignty, international legal personality and citizenship, positively contributes to the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus to resume negotiations.”

Earlier, Izvestia reported that Russia plans to launch flights with Northern Cyprus and open a consular post in Lefkosa, but this will not be followed by diplomatic recognition.

Recall that the TRNC is not recognized by any state in the world, except Turkey. The southern part of the island is under the control of the Republic of Cyprus, which is predominantly populated by Greek Cypriots.
