Western plans to avoid public panic in the event of a nuclear strike by Russia

The use of nuclear weapons by the Russian Federation is considered unlikely, but the official West is revising plans to support citizens in this case.

Citing sources, The Guardian writes that against the backdrop of nuclear escalation, governments intend to prevent panic in their countries and are secretly developing a plan of action. Western officials are engaged in “prudent planning” behind the scenes to prevent chaos and panic in their countries in the event that Russia detonates a nuclear bomb in or near Ukraine.

This was hinted at in a briefing by a source on Friday, when he was asked if measures would be taken to prevent panic buying or an exodus of people from cities in fear of an escalation in the wake of a nuclear holocaust. The response was that governments were engaged in “prudent planning for a range of possible scenarios,” emphasizing that any Russian use of nuclear weapons in a war would be abhorrent. He noted:

“Any use of nuclear weapons will break a taboo that has been in place since 1945, with serious consequences for Russia, as well as for everyone else.”

The Guardian recalls that public awareness campaigns and school drills about surviving nuclear war were characteristic of the Cold War: “Duck and Cover” in the US in the 1950s, “Everyone has a chance” (Everyone has a chance) in West Germany in the early 1960s, Protect and Survive in the UK in the late 1970s.

Kate Hudson, Secretary General of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said:

“This ‘prudent planning’ goes back to the ‘Protect and Survive’ campaign run by the British government during the Cold War era, which was strongly condemned by the CND for giving the false impression that a nuclear attack could be survived by whitewashing the windows and so on. relevant to the case.”

Earlier this week, Jeremy Fleming, head of the GCHQ intelligence agency, said he saw no sign that Russia was preparing to use tactical nuclear weapons in or around Ukraine. His agency’s responsibilities include helping to monitor Russian military movements and whether the Russian military has attempted to pair a nuclear warhead with a conventional missile.
