U.S. Supreme Court ruling on abortion fires Greek Orthodox

The shocking US Supreme Court decision led Orthodox Greek Christians to demand an end to abortion, a legal right for women in Greece since 1979.

A month later, in Thessaloniki and other cities in northern Greece, social activists came out in support of the “right of the embryo to life.”

Minutes after the U.S. Supreme Court decision broke, several social media accounts cheered it and began posting anti-abortion messages with charts showing that fully developed embryos had been “forcibly removed.”

“What happens in Greece after the decision of the US court? The time has come to protect the rights of unborn children, ”wrote in one of his Twitter accounts.

In January 2020, Greek Orthodox anti-abortion filled metro stations with anti-abortion posters.

The Aφήστε με να ζήσω movement, a public organization that openly opposes abortion, is allegedly behind the placement of the Let Me Live poster in the subway, including through articles and publications. The message on the poster in question reads: “Did you know that the heart of an embryo starts beating from the 18th day? From the 42nd day does the functioning of brain activity begin? By the 8th week, all his organs are already formed? And by the 10th week, he may be in pain”?

The Anti-Abortion Movement uses exactly the same picture that was featured on the cover of SporTime on December 29, the “Unborn Child Day” established by the Holy Synod, suggestive of the Catholic Church.

“If the embryo is not a person, then you are not a woman”: an anti-abortion campaign in northern Greece

Hundreds of posters in support of the rights of the unborn child read: “Human rights begin at conception.” Posters with photographs were also posted on social networks. Facebook users believe that this is a continuation of the campaign that was previously carried out at metro stations in Athens by decision of the Minister of Transport.

Both in Athens and in Thessaloniki, the posters did not hang for long, causing a mixed reaction from the public. Residents and guests of the capital were divided into two opposing camps: some were in favor of abortion, while others were categorically against it. After such a violent reaction, the posters were removed from the Athens metro stations, as well as from the streets of Thessaloniki.

The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ruling that there was no longer a federal constitutional right to abortion.

Rowe vs. Wade in 1973was a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in which the court held that the United States Constitution generally protects a pregnant woman’s freedom to have an abortion.

50 years later, the US is returning, in at least 20 federal states, to a ban on abortion.

    • The right to abortion will be determined by the states unless Congress decides otherwise.

The abortion ban makes no exceptions for rape, incest, or fetal death.

Biden: “Literally take America back 150 years”

In an unusual address to the nation, President Joe Biden said Friday’s decision “literally takes America back 150 years”:The court laid out state laws criminalizing abortion that date back to the 1800s as the rationale – the court literally takes America back 150 years. In my opinion, this is a sad day for the country.

Biden foresaw the November election and said voters should vote for representatives who would restore the right to abortion.

“Let me be very clear and unambiguous. The only way we can secure a woman’s right to choose… is for Congress to reinstate Roe v. Wade protection as federal law. No executive action by the president can do that,” he said.

“Rowe’s law is on the ballot this fall. Personal freedoms are included in the newsletter. The right to privacy, freedom, equality – it’s all in the ballots. Until then, I will do everything in my power to protect the rights of women in states where they will face the consequences of today’s decision, ”said Biden in his appeal.

Former President Donald Trump, who appointed six justices to the Supreme Court to satisfy his Pro Life supporters, said Friday’s decision was “God’s work.”

Thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the decision of the Supreme Court. Famous and little-known Americans flooded social networks with protest posts.

“I read that the abbreviation for the U.S. Supreme Court is SCOTUS. Good fit, as Skotos means “Darkness” in Greek.” Alexis Tsipras.

Opinion

The main argument of those who do not see anything reprehensible in abortion is that before birth, the child is part of the mother’s body. It is she who decides what to do with her body – dye or not dye her hair, treat or not treat her teeth, have or not have children. The second argument is that at the first stages of development, the embryo bears little resemblance to a human being, so it will be psychologically easier to get rid of it with the help of a medical operation.

The bishops of the Greek Orthodox Church supported the doctors of the island of Samos, who refused to perform abortions...

There is still no consensus in modern society about the period when an unborn child has the right to be considered alive. Believers claim that life begins from the moment of conception, which happened by the will of God and with His blessings.

At the same time, doctors call different dates – for example, the 22nd day of pregnancy, when the fetus forms its own circulatory system and a tiny heart begins to beat. In America, the concept of “viability” is used – i.e. the child’s ability to exist outside the mother’s body. This period occurs only at the 7th month of pregnancy.
