Popular Greek singer Dakis dies at 79

Popular Greek singer Dakis passed away on Sunday at the age of 79 after a long battle with cancer.

Dakis, whose real name is Vrassidas Charalambidis, was born in Alexandria (Egypt) in 1943.

In 1963 he came to Greece and started singing in clubs a year later. He spoke six languages ​​(Greek, French, Italian, Spanish and Arabic), which allowed him to have an international repertoire.

He was among the supporting singers at the Rolling Stones concert in Athens in August 1967.

Dakis collaborated internationally with Charles Aznavour, Dalida, Milva, Joe Dassin, Sasha Distel and Demis Roussos, with whom they were cousins.

The singer has collaborated with several popular Greek composers such as Mimis Plessas, Yiannos Spanos and Giorgos Katsaros, as well as lyricists such as Pythagoras, Lefteris Papadopoulos, Manos Eleftheriou and Dimitris Yatropoulos.

He participated in many theatrical productions, TV shows and Greek films. Among his most popular songs are “Monsieur Cannibal”, “Tu veux out tu veux pas” and others in Greek.
