As reported by Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA), today at the University of Heidelberg, in the auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine, there was a shooting.
According to the publication, a student of the medical faculty shot, who then committed suicide. According to preliminary information from the police, the perpetrator acted alone.
Emergency services are at the scene at the University of Heidelberg, in southwest Germany. As a result of the tragic incident, four people were injured, a young girl died from her wounds a few hours later.
While there is no official information about the victim of the shooting, but the death of the girl was confirmed by Karin Prien, chairman of the permanent conference of ministers of education and culture of the federal states. She expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, saying that she was “shocked how a peaceful place of joint study became the site of an armed attack.”
An initial investigation into the incident indicates that the perpetrator, who is dead, had no accomplices, a police spokesman said. The identity of the shooter has not been released, as have the circumstances of his death and possible motives.
It all happened during a lecture in one of the auditoriums of the medical faculty, after the shooting, the young man ran out of the university building. The area of the university is cordoned off, search and investigation activities are being carried out.
According to the DPA agency, which cites security sources, the attacker shot himself. He was a student and is not known at this time to be motivated by religious or political motives. He carried several long-barreled firearms with him.
