Electricity and gas subsidies extend for January

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Friday that the government will provide financial assistance to help households and businesses cope with skyrocketing energy prices in January, costing the country’s budget around 400 million euros.

“For another month, the government will support households, farmers and businesses in the face of the global energy crisis. In January alone, it will provide another 400 million euros, which will cover a significant part of the increase in electricity bills. And it will constantly monitor this phenomenon until it subsides, ”Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a statement released on Friday about measures to support households and businesses from the effects of the energy crisis.

“The Energy Minister will make detailed announcements for each category shortly. And for a government subsidy, and for discounts on electricity and natural gas. It is a generous and realistic relief plan that helps in the present, but does not jeopardize the future, ”he stressed.

“The emphasis is obviously on making life easier for our household members. But we will also help businesses on the path to growth while preserving jobs. And mainly in order not to increase the cost of production, and this, in turn, will affect the prices of products, ”he added.

“This program will soon be followed by another one that deals with overall energy savings. Based on this, there will be subsidies for the replacement of old electrical appliances, which will then be disposed of. Our goal is for all houses in Greece to be equipped with modern and more economical electrical equipment, ”the prime minister emphasized.

Clarifying the electricity subsidies, Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas said the subsidy would be 42 euros for medium-sized households and 54 euros for vulnerable households. Financial assistance for natural gas will amount to 40 euros.

All primary residence benefits will be subsidized as specified in E1 (~ 4.2 million benefits), regardless of income, place of residence, or provider.

The subsidy will be scalable to stimulate energy savings:

for the first 150 kWh of consumption per month, the subsidy will be 80% of the amount in the amount of 160 EUR / MWh; for monthly consumption from 151 to 300 kWh, the subsidy will be 60% of an increase of 120 EUR / MWh; thus the average monthly assistance corresponds to 42 euros for the first 300 kWh.

For households included in the Social Housing Tariff (STO), the subsidy will be € 180 / MWh, i.e. 90% of the increase will be offset by subsidies.

The average monthly CTO assistance is 54 euros for the first 300 kWh.

Electricity – Subsidy on invoices other than household (commercial)

All non-residential tariffs (agricultural, commercial, industrial, professional, other uses, etc.) will be subsidized horizontally, regardless of size and voltage level (low, medium, high voltage). The subsidy will be 50% of the increased costs and will cover all monthly consumption. The unit price of the subsidy is set at EUR 65 / MWh. The total amount of subsidies for businesses in January is estimated at 133 million euros.

Natural gas

The subsidy from the government will be € 20 per MWh of heat energy for all suppliers, as well as for total monthly consumption. This applies to 540,000 household consumers, regardless of income, home size or supplier. An additional discount will be provided by DEPA in the amount of EUR 20 per MWh of thermal energy for the total monthly consumption for its customers, and related support will be requested from other suppliers in cooperation with it. The total subsidy from the government and DEPA will amount to 54 million euros in January, with the wholesale price of natural gas estimated at 114 euros / MWh. The measure will be reviewed every month and the unit cost of subsidies will be adjusted.

Natural gas: subsidy for non-household (commercial) bills

The government VAT subsidy applies to all commercial consumers and industry, regardless of size, turnover and number of employees. For January 2022, the subsidy will be € 30 / MWh. The total amount of aid for January is estimated at 51 million euros.

According to the minister, the cost of a megawatt-hour is three times higher than last year, and state support has been going on for the fifth month. According to Mr. Skrekas, 1.3 billion euros have been allocated for this purpose since September, and this month the measures have been expanded.
