Rescue operation on Evros, Turks asked for asylum in Greece

A group of 17 Turkish citizens yesterday at noon, December 1, crossed the border in the Evros River Delta to seek asylum and found themselves in difficult conditions. They went to the police.

Among the border violators there are 8 men, 4 women and 5 children. evros-news.gr… Finding themselves in a difficult situation, they sent an electronic call for help to the police, indicating their location.

However, the police officers who arrived at the scene did not find them there and found them after many hours of searching in another hard-to-reach place. The boat on which the fugitives arrived from Turkey was completely destroyed. After the rescue, all the Turks were taken to the police to find out their identities. They stated that they were in danger at home and that they were seeking asylum in Greece.

All the rescued were provided with medical assistance, due to the endured ordeals, they were in poor physical and mental condition. Turkish refugees are placed in a safe place, all legal procedures will be followed in accordance with Greek law.

The incident became known at a briefing by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
