The mysterious death of a Russian diplomat in Berlin

An employee of the Russian embassy was found dead under the windows of the department in Berlin.

According to Spiegel, citing a law enforcement source, the 35-year-old second secretary of the Russian Embassy in Berlin allegedly fell out of a window on the top floor of the consular department building on Berenstrasse, in the Mitte district of Berlin. The incident occurred at 7:20 am on October 19. The body of the deceased diplomat was found by guards of the Berlin police. The rescuers they called tried to resuscitate the man, but he died.

Sources of the publication in the Federal Republic of Germany’s Security Service reported that the cause of death, as well as the circumstances of the tragedy, were “unknown.” Kirill Zhalo was accredited in the summer of 2019. Later, according to the newspaper, an undercover secret service officer was suspected of him. Spiegel reports that the body of the diplomat was transported to Russia, which did not give permission for an autopsy of the deceased in Germany.

The embassy refused to comment on the newspaper for “ethical reasons”, as did the German Foreign Ministry. Christopher Burger, a spokesman for the German Foreign Office, said:

“I ask for your understanding that for reasons of protecting the personal data of the deceased and loved ones, I cannot give other details.”

From November 1 to 4, the name of Kirill Zhalo was removed from the diplomatic list of the German Foreign Ministry.
