Prosecutor General of Greece opened a case on deliberate arson

The intervention of the prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Vasilis Pliotas, was triggered by massive fires throughout Greece, and the prosecutor’s office immediately opened an investigation, as, as already noted, there are suspicions of deliberate organized arson.

The order reads as follows: “The excessive number of fires of unusual intensity and magnitude that have occurred in recent days, have led to incalculable damage to the environment (and especially the country’s forest wealth), buildings, structures in rural areas and crops, as well as tourism infrastructure, endangering the lives of a large number of our fellow citizens. “Synchronization” in their appearances creates a well-founded suspicion of deliberate organized criminal activity rather than simple cases of negligent behavior.

For this, we ask you, in the context of the ex-officio preliminary investigation in accordance with Article 245 par. By the Police Arson Prevention Department, to collect all important data indicating the existence of an organized plan and centralized planning of individual actions of the participants in the arson by a criminal organization, that is, the commission of the crime specified in paragraphs 1 and 2 of Article 187 of the Criminal Code: forest arson and other malicious arson (Articles 264 p. 1 and 265 p. 1 p. B, c of the Criminal Code). It goes without saying that collection should start immediately.

The supervisory appellate prosecutor will inform the competent Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Mr. Lambros Sofoulakis, about the progress of the preliminary investigation in the initiation of criminal proceedings.
