One victory for two, or each a medal

For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, two athletes shared the victory and received a gold medal each.

Two high jumpers, Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy, showed the same result in the high jump competition – 2.37 meters. They could use an additional attempt and determine which of them is worthy of Olympic gold, and the official representative of the organizers of the competition asked the athletes about this.

In response, the judge heard a counter question from Barshim: “Can we get two gold?” Probably, the athlete did not even expect to get consent, but suddenly he heard: “Decide if you want it!”.

As a result, both athletes decided to give up additional attempts and receive one medal of the highest standard. As the saying goes, “a bird is better in hand” … For the first time in the history of the modern Games, a similar situation has developed, but everyone was happy. The Italian could not contain his emotions: he rode, hugged his opponent violently and, in the end, just burst into tears, lying on the ground.

The bronze medal went to Maxim Nedosekov from the Belarusian national team. Interestingly, he overcame the same height as the winners – 2.37 meters. However, he used more attempts and could not apply for a gold medal.
