N. Iliopoulos: Cancellation of 8 hour working day "ND" encourages employers to break the law

“Elastic working day, work without rights, life without rights” – this is how the representative of SYRIZA, Nassos Iliopoulos, described the New Democracy’s bill on labor on the air of “Real FM 97.8”.

New legislation regarding working hours, last week reported Minister of Labor and Social Policy Kostis Hatzidakis, speaking of a 4-day working week with a working time of 10 hours.

According to a SYRIZA spokesman, “this law allows you to work for ten hours without additional pay for 6 months in a row, that is, to work 10 hours and get paid for eight hours, while ignoring the individual labor contract, which practically means that the employee will not be able to agree on the terms of his work. “Nassos Iliopoulos noted that this law, in fact, calls on employers to violate labor laws.

At the same time, according to him, the SYRIZA government earlier “showed that there is another way – which eliminates the tyranny of the employer.” Specifically, he stated that “177,000 employees in the private sector were paid for overtime between September and December 2017” and that “following the legislative changes we made then and strengthening control in the workplace in September-December 2018, overtime was paid for for 371 thousand employees, more than 3 million hours of overtime work were declared and paid for ”. He stressed that the SYRIZA government “restored collective bargaining agreements, while increasing the minimum wage by 11%.”
Mr. Iliopoulos stressed that “the approach proposed by the ND is the same as in 2012, when there were hopes that unemployment would decrease and increase with flexible working hours”. However, he noted that “after the introduction of such rules, an explosion of unemployment and recession followed.”

As for the pandemic, he stressed that “we are between the coronavirus Scylah and the economic Charybdis.” Nassos Iliopoulos believes that “The government has implemented a kind of blocking, which obviously did not work. More than 8,700 of our citizens have died from the coronavirus since November. ” A SYRIZA spokesman accused ND of “never doing anything to deal with major outbreaks of the virus, in the workplace and in transport, and she never believed in a strong health system.”

Mr. Iliopoulos reaffirmed the need to immediately “engage private clinics to save lives.”

As for the economy, he commented that “even if all types of activities open up tomorrow, small and medium-sized enterprises will not be able to survive without radical financial support measures.” He highlighted SYRIZA’s position on the implementation of the private debt management plan, which will include writing off a significant part of it – depending on the drop in turnover of each company or employee income – and debt adjustment in the form of installments with 120 doses of payments. “In addition to the fact that it is socially legal, it is also economically rational, because in the end the state will not be deprived of income from companies that will close,” said a SYRIZA representative.

On new legislation on working hours, last week reported Minister of Labor and Social Policy Kostis Hatzidakis, speaking of a 4-day working week with a working time of 10 hours.

The changes in employment status were reported by Kostis Hatzidakis. During his speech at the meeting of the parliamentary group, he mentioned the upcoming changes in the draft law on labor. He stressed that “four days of work with ten hours are aimed at protecting the working class.”

“5 days with 8 hours of work can correspond to 4 days with 10 hours and one day off. The system will benefit employees who want to work more on some days or, for example, be able to take vacation or work less on other days. This happens without lowering wages or increasing hours of work in general.

The regulation of working time can be carried out only by a collective agreement (since it is in force today) or at the request of an employee, to combine personal and professional life, ”said the Minister of Labor.

We will remind, as “Russian Athens” wrote earlier, last year, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the authorities were already thinking about how increase the working day to 10 hours
