Still standing: Court rejects hotel's appeal against refusal to reduce its height

The Council of State, Greece's highest administrative court, has once again rejected an appeal by the Coco-Mat hotel in the Makrygianni area of central Athens over its height.

The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by Blue Cedar Investments, which sought to overturn a decision by the Ministry of Culture to lower the height of an already built hotel.

In particular, the court rejected the company's claim that the hotel was built on the basis of a valid building permit, which was subsequently revoked because it was not issued legally, reports kathimerini on Friday.

Blue Cedar's appeal was filed against a July 2020 decision that rejected a building assessment for the hotel at 5 Falirou Street, ruling that the building's height should be reduced to no more than 24 metres.

Let us recall that local residents raised this issue back in February 2019, as the height of the hotel prevented some residents from seeing the Acropolis.

Court decisions on appeal have time and again resulted in the hotel still standing in the area, despite the tourism ministry sealed the two upper floors in March 2024, and in 2020 a court decision ordered demolish two upper floors.
