This beloved sweet can be eaten by almost everyone, with rare exceptions – about the benefits of marmalade and minor restrictions.
What is marmalade made of?
The ingredients used to make marmalade are what make it so healthy. It is made from fruit juices by evaporation until it becomes thick and viscous, and the raw material is most often pectin-rich fruits and berries – black currant, apricots, apples, quince. Later it began to be made from citrus juice. Then gelatin, pectin, agar-agar began to be used in the preparation of marmalade.
Nowadays, the composition of marmalade has changed – sugar or molasses is added to natural juice or fruit puree, the liquid is evaporated, mixed with gelatin or agar-agar, dyes are added and then left to cool. The healthy treat is made from natural juices and dyes.
What are the benefits of marmalade?
Pectin, most commonly used to make marmalade, is found in many fruits and has positive health benefits:
- reduces bad cholesterol levels,
- restores carbohydrate and lipid metabolism,
- fights gastrointestinal diseases,
- stimulates rapid healing of the skin,
- helps cleanse the body of heavy metals.
Agar-agar, used to make jelly, protects the liver, removing toxins and waste from the body, improves gastric peristalsis. Since agar-agar is extracted from seaweed and contains a lot of iodine, marmalade is useful for people with thyroid disease.
Marmalade too good for jointsas it strengthens cartilage tissue.
A bit of negativity
In industrial production of marmalade, artificial colors, flavors, chemical additives are added to it, which can provoke an allergic reaction, and not only. Therefore You need to choose healthy natural marmalade without artificial colors and flavors, with low sugar content.
You should also be careful with “healthy” marmalade: if it is prepared on the basis of agar-agar, it can provoke an excess of iodine in the body. Due to the increased sugar content Marmalade is not recommended for diabetics – for them, the popular delicacy is produced specifically without sugar.
