Diarrhea: Dietary Features and When to See a Doctor (Video)


Diarrhea is watery or loose stool at least three times a day. How to eat in this condition, and what foods should not be consumed?

What causes diarrhea?

The causes of the pathological condition may be different:

  • fried, fatty and spicy foods;
  • dairy products, including milk-based protein drinks (except yogurt);
  • legumes;
  • nuts and seeds;
  • dried fruits;
  • berries with seeds, raw vegetables and fruits (corn, pineapples, cherries, figs, currants, grapes – in no form);
  • citrus fruits and juices;
  • onion and garlic;
  • candies;
  • potato chips;
  • nut butters;
  • fatty meat;
  • fatty fish (including herring, sardines);
  • carbonated drinks (even carbonated mineral water);
  • coffee, strong tea;
  • alcohol;
  • artificial sweeteners (particularly sorbitol).

Of course, with such restrictions it will not be a balanced diet, so it cannot be followed for a long time. If diarrhea “lingers” longer than 2-3 days, then be sure to seek help from a doctor.

What can you eat when you have diarrhea?

  • white bread;
  • unsweetened crackers/rusks/pretzels;
  • weak tea.
