The woman who spoke out about what happened and is happening called it a “massacre”, telling the BBC that “Young people walked the streets with wounds to their arms, backs and eyes… They couldn't see anything.” She added that “An atmosphere of panic has gripped people to such an extent that they are afraid to walk next to each other. This is a very frightening situation.”
Lebanese people reportedly feel trapped in a “They don't know if their phones are safe.” Indeed, many have started keeping their electronic devices away from themselves, and some are even changing their mobile phone numbers for fear that they might explode! Residents' feelings have been exacerbated by rumours on social media that even solar panels have started exploding. As people live in fear, authorities at Beirut's Rafic Hariri Airport have banned devices such as walkie-talkies and pagers on all flights.
Lebanese resident Ghida told the BBC of the state of panic: “Everyone is panicking,” she said, we don't know if we can stay near our computers, phones. Now everything looks dangerous and no one knows what to do.”
She also expressed her fear of a larger war, saying: “I fear for my country, for my people. We deserve better, but we are paying the price for the war between Hezbollah, Israel and Iran.”
